IPGP Marine Rock Repository is located on the site of the French National Magnetic Observatory at Chambon La Forêt, ~100 km South of Paris. This repository is part of a French National network to permanently archive rock samples from French Oceanographic cruises, and make them available to the scientific community. Its construction started at the end of 2018, and was completed in Spring 2019.
You can find maps, access, and location information through this link: http://www.ipgp.fr/fr/obsmag/contacter
Currently the IPGP Marine Rock Repository archives more than 5000 samples collected during 19 oceanographic cruises, from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and the Caribbean.
Sample availability: All samples are available after a moratorium period of ~5 years (longer for some specific cruises, depending on on-going research). If you are interested in obtaining samples you may contact lithotheque@ipgp.fr.
Sample information and IGSN. All samples are registered in the SESAR database and have been allocated an IGSN number. You may access sample information directly from SESAR (http://www.geosamples.org), or through the tables available for download in the cruise pages (see menu above).
Submission of samples for archival. IPGP Marine Rock Repository may accept samples from future French oceanographic cruises conducted by CNRS teams outside IPGP. The Repository has stringent requirements regarding sample curation (i.e., packing and archival boxes). Prior declaration of samples to IGSN is also mandatory. To discuss the conditions and requirements to submit samples, please contact lithotheque@ipgp.fr.
